An eternal memory

oil painting

80x100 cm

Elyn had been living in Provence for five years when she painted this painting. The lights in her work are not always those of Provence. Remembrance: artificial lights burst forth from all sides in Shanghai, like fireflies reaching the firmament to twinkle ever more and then go out. The entire city is draped in dreams of unexpected colors.

It is these artificial lights, those also of a tormented social life, that have condemned Elyn to wandering in search of a peaceful life. But, inevitably, the nostalgia for her hometown has emerged, like an unconscious, nourished by Chinese culture and history for more than 20 years. There are memories that can never be erased. Childhood is a lingering sun, a memory that one cannot leave behind, a sweetness that one will never find again.

Reminiscence of an urban past, where mist and then rain came slowly but collapsed precipitously, like the joys and sorrows of life. Elyn would like to see only the light of the sun. Like a hope that happiness can come for a long time. A hope that illuminates her painting with the audacity to think that it will be embodied in this earthly world.
