Self-portrait in Miao dress

oil painting

96x145 cm

Elyn dreams of elsewhere and of history. The crazy march of the modern Chinese world, its enthusiasm for progress, science and technology are getting the better of, day after day, a traditional culture and a history that never stop disappearing.

By wearing a traditional Chinese dress worn by women of the Miao ethnic group she does not know, she wanted to honor the lives of minorities in her country who, caught up in the great torment of globalization, seem to be fading away in their differences. Little by little, all cities look the same, all lives are similar.

A photographer will capture the moment of this dress. Elyn will quickly reproduce, in a figurative style that she masters perfectly, this snapshot, a tribute to women who endure a life that they did not choose, far from their roots, far from their history, too far from their culture.
